A home away from Home

At Mas Méjean, in Saint Rémy de Provence, everything invites you to rest. Nestled in a 4500 m² garden, this 18th century house keeps all the charm of Provence intact. A bohemian, intimate and poetic place, where every detail tells a story.

The 15 by 5 metre pool, designed like an Indian water tank, is perfect for morning lengths and inviting at every moment of the day. Set a little apart, sheltered behind cypress trees, it lies hidden from view of the house: a private, intimate place, where swimming feels like stepping into a secret garden. Unheated, it follows the rhythm of the Provençal sun, which warms it naturally through the summer.

The shaded gardens invite you to let go, lulled by the stream, the song of the toads and the whisper of the plane tree.

Within its walls

Inside, Mas Méjean offers every comfort: six bedrooms and three bathrooms, spread across three wings, so that everyone finds their own privacy.

The living room with its billiards table, the kitchen and the dining room welcome shared meals, in a bohemian atmosphere, among antique furniture and objects gathered over the years.

The house has been dressed with care, keeping its soul and its Provençal light. The great living room, with its stone fireplace, recalls the houses of Pagnol. Everywhere, objects brought back from travels, each carrying a story.

The whole house is yours alone, garden and pool included. The Mas Méjean rests in a peaceful setting, a few minutes’ walk from the historic centre, its market, shops, restaurants and cafés.

One of Saint Rémy’s best kept secrets.

A Hidden Gem

A few steps from Saint Rémy

This 18th century farmhouse is nestle in a magnificent garden. It will be your magic landscape.

The 350 year old plane tree stands proudly, watching over the south facade and casting its magical shade in summer. It is the revered “grandfather” of the land.

The walls of the Mas, 50 cm thick, are built from the golden limestone of Les Baux de Provence. Six bedrooms spread across three wings, each with its own bathroom, so everyone finds a place of their own.

A flowing stream and the chorus of birds set the rhythm of the day. Yet the market, the cafés and the old town are only a few minutes’ walk away: silence and village life, side by side.

Around the long dining table, meals become moments to remember, from slow breakfasts in the garden to late summer dinners under the stars. A generous kitchen, a house made for sharing.

Everywhere, objects brought back from India and beyond, colours that change from one bedroom to the next. A bohemian Provence, where every corner tells a story.

The 15 by 5 metre pool, drawn like the water tanks of Indian temples, lies hidden behind the cypresses. A private, intimate place, where swimming feels like stepping into a secret garden.

The Mas’s Spirit

Mas Méjean was not decorated, it was composed. For twenty five years I created places in Pondicherry, my own home and La Maison Rose, featured in The World of Interiors et Elle Décoration, alongside my parents’ house. The Mas belongs to that same family story, where every object, every texture, every patina seems to have travelled through time, as if the house had always been there.

Here, Provence meets India. A pool shaped like a temple water tank, stone elephants by the water, objects gathered on my travels, colours that change from one bedroom to the next. A bohemian Provence, walls that hold memories.

I believe space shapes us. The light, the textures, the birds of the garden, everything is attuned so the body can settle. Our guests often say it: you sleep better here, you slow down, and you find it hard to leave.

The Provence around us

There are as many Provences as there are Provençal people.

The Saint Rémois will happily say their village is the heart of Provence. I believe that when we love Provence, our heart is the centre of Provence. But really, there are the Alpilles, their history, their Celtic lineage that mostly goes unmentioned, the light that has attracted so many artists, and the unique moments gathered that have become memories, anchored and woven into the tapestry of our lives. Provence is poetic, joyful and eternal.

Bistrots and café’s terraces

In Saint Rémy, life happens on the terraces.

Under the plane trees, the cafés fill from the first morning coffee to the sunset aperitif, and there is an inherent rhythm and ritual to it.

You might be the one picking up your newspaper at the Presse shop down the road, strolling back to your favourite sunny spot for an espresso and a croissant.

Or the one with a tea and a great book, pausing solo in the afternoon. Or the joyful aperitif type, olives and almonds, gearing up for dinner, meeting friends and bubbling about.

Art and Culture

In Saint Rémy, art is in the light.

Everyone knows that this light held Van Gogh here, painting the olive trees and the starry skies of the Alpilles. What fewer people know is that it never stopped drawing artists. When I was born, in 1970, Saint Rémy was a hub for painters, sculptors and writers. We spent hours at the vernissages of the iconic gallery of Noëlla Gest, and our house was always full of artists: billiards games, jazz at full blast and whisky joys late into the night.

That thread still runs through the region today, with an incredible concentration of art exhibitions, museums and festivals, very unique in France.

Wandering Shopping

In Saint Rémy, shopping is a slow pleasure.

Your day might begin at the Maison de la Presse, with the morning papers and a new book to read by the pool. Then comes the basket for a long lunch at the Mas: first Le Mas de la Ferme, then Alpilles Bio, L’Épicerie Heureuse, Pimprenelle and Le Jardin des Alpilles, and on Wednesday mornings the market, with its seasonal fruit, cheeses, olives and herbs.

Steps from the Mas, La Boutique des Jardins, run by my sister, opens its doors from April to September. A little further, Atelier Rida is a true Ali Baba’s cave of extraordinary antique carpets, antique textiles and a thousand and one treasures, while Florame, born here in the Alpilles, fills the air with its essential oils. Sooner or later, everyone ends up at Joël Durand, master chocolatier, and his alphabet of flavours, pure delight.

Nature everywhere

In Saint Rémy, nature begins at the end of the road. A short walk from the old town, the lake of Peirou keeps its cool even in summer. From there, a short climb leads to the Cheminée, and to an unforgettable view over Saint Rémy and the plain.

Beyond it, the Alpilles Natural Park opens endless trails among pines, rosemary and white limestone, including a botanical walk that starts from Les Antiques. Some prefer two wheels, and the ride to Eygalières, through olive groves and orchards, ends in one of the loveliest villages of the Alpilles.

Others choose the sky: at the Romanin gliding club, just outside Saint Rémy, you soar above the hills in complete silence, the whole of Provence beneath your wings.

October, France

Our stay at Agathe's was excellent. The location of this Provençal farmhouse is perfect, a 10 minute walk from the picturesque village of Saint Rémy de Provence. We really enjoyed having breakfast in its splendid garden. The room was spacious and very quiet. We will most likely come back this summer to enjoy the beautiful pool. Thank you Agathe.
